Ketamine-Assisted Therapy FAQ

What is Ketamine-Assisted Therapy (KAT)?

Ketamine-Assisted Therapy is a therapeutic approach that combines the use of ketamine, a dissociative anesthetic, with therapy to treat various mental health conditions, such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, PTSD, trauma, and addiction.

Is KAT safe?

When administered by trained professionals in a controlled environment, KAT is generally considered safe. Ketamine has been used safely in medical settings for decades, however, it may have side effects, and it is not recommended for individuals with certain medical conditions or a history of psychosis.

Is KAT covered by insurance?

At this time insurance does not cover ketamine-assisted therapy. We do however partner with   CareCredit to provide financing options.

How many KAT sessions are usually needed?

The number of sessions required varies from person to person. Some individuals may benefit from a single session, while others may require multiple sessions spaced over several weeks.

Are there any potential side effects of KAT?

Common side effects of ketamine may include dissociation, changes in perception, dizziness, and nausea. These effects are typically temporary and monitored during the session.

How does Ketamine work in therapy?

Ketamine is thought to work by affecting certain brain receptors and neurotransmitters, leading to altered perception and cognition. In a therapeutic setting, it can help individuals access and process difficult emotions and thoughts they may otherwise not be able to acess.  KAT sessions also are scheduled for two and a half hours instead of the traditional hour, allowing you for more time to work through things that come up.

How long does a KAT session typically last?

Our KAT sessions are for 2.5 hours. This allows time for intention setting, administration of ketamine, the therapeutic process, and the integration phase afterward.

What should I expect during a KAT session?

During a KAT session, you can expect to receive a controlled dose of ketamine administered by our medical provider and engage in therapy with a trained therapist. The experience may include altered perceptions and emotions, which are part of the therapeutic process. Your therapist is with you throughout the entire session to support you.
